Antimicrobial Tests

An antimicrobial substance (natural, semi-synthetic or synthetic) is a substance capable of destroying or inhibiting the growth of microorganisms, but causes little or no damage to the host. Antimicrobial drugs either kill (microbicidal) or prevent the growth of microorganisms (microbistatic).

An antimicrobial activity assay is a challenge test to determine the microbicidal/microbistatic properties of a product by challenging it with targeted microorganisms. Survivability of targeted microorganisms in the challenged product is monitored for 24 hours continuously by using spectrophotometer.

The advantages of this test are:

  • Can select from >20 species of bacteria/yeasts as targeted microorganisms
  • Can determine concentration of targeted microorganisms
  • Can select eleven series concentration of product to be tested
  • Can monitor antimicrobial activity for 24 hours continuously
Reporting the Results

An example of how result is reported for anti-Salmonella activity in Product ABC:

100% of anti-Salmonella activity was detected in Product ABC (Batch No.) at [XX ppm] versus control (Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC 14028, 105cfu/ml) at the ratio of 1:1.

XX = Product concentrations to be tested as requested by customer

VFAD provides antimicrobial activity assays as listed below*:-
